National Mottos of the World, Top 5 Most Badass Mottos

Top 5

The state motto describes the intent or motivation of the state in a short phrase. Usually the themes are quite similar considering about god, revolution, peace, progress and justice. Some countries don't have any official motto.

In this post I have posted the most epic mottos, which were somehow different than the others or unique in some way.

1. Austria

"Austriae est imperare orbi unverso"

Meaning: It's Austria's destiny to rule the world
Language: Latin
Comments: The motto is really old, from the times of the Habsburg dynasty in the 1500s, but how epic is that, to proclaim that it's Austria's destiny to rule the world. I just love this one, it's my absolute favourite even though Austria hasn't lived up to its motto lately.

2. Azores

"Antes morrer livres que em paz sujeitos"

Meaning: Rather die as free men than be enslaved in peace
Language: Portuguese
Comments: Azores belong to Portugal. This motto shows the past of the Azores when black slaves were traded from Africa to America using the islands of the Atlantic as trade posts.

3. Fiji

"Rerevaka na Kalou ka Doka na Tui"

Meaning: Fear God and honor the Queen
Language: Fijian
Comments: Very religious statement which wouldn't be used so much nowadays. Also the authority of the Queen of England is shown here since Fiji is a former colony of the British Empire.

4. Nepal

"Janani Janmabhoomischa Swargadapi Gariyasi"

Meaning: Mother and motherland are greater than heaven
Language: Sanskrit
Comments: This might be the most patriotic motto I have ever seen, quite bold to state that mother and motherland are greater than heaven. I thought there's nothing better than heaven, but obviously Nepal is.

5. Cuba

"Patria o muerte"

Meaning: Homeland or death
Language: Spanish
Comments: Some countries have this same theme, Uruguay has liberty or death, the former Empire of Brazil had Independence or death. But this is very powerful because Cuba has struggled for decades against the embargo and other problems. It shows the will to do anything for their homeland and not surrender.
